about

This piece was created in collaboration with Steve Chisnell as part of the project: Waywords and Meansigns: Recreating Finnegans Wake [in its whole wholume] which seeks to set James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake to music.

The music represents the dream-space atmosphere of the novel through its expansive space, unusual sound palette, and sonic depth.

Compositional techniques employed include serial tone-rows, juxtapositions of pitch and noise, tonality and atonality, and unexpected rhythms and phrase lengths.

The individual pieces also open and close with the same musical motifs to reflect the novel’s opening and closing sentence fragments and its never-ending cyclical nature.
